Curriculum

The design of the STAR curriculum is based on a holistic approach to lifting people out of poverty through combined job skills and life skills training. The program is 8 weeks long with small class size to provide a more closely supervised learning environment. The teaching method consists of hands-on, instructor-led training supplemented by individual lab time. Each student receives a professionally prepared notebook that includes exercises, activities and reference materials designed by the instructor to reinforce the training modules.

The STAR program provides instruction in three areas: Basic Computer Literacy, Life Skills and Job Readiness. The course breakdown is as follows:

Computer Literacy – Introduction to Computers, Keyboarding, Windows, Microsoft Word and Excel, Internet and Email. Our goal is for all participants to acquire a basic understanding of computers, though some learn more advanced concepts.

Life Skills – Workshops (often conducted by community professionals) in credit repair, debt consolidation, savings and checking accounts, budgeting, mortgages, home ownership and citizenship. Goal setting for personal and professional growth is the foundation for each student’s progress.

Job Readiness – Completing on-line job searches and applications, and learning how to successfully engage in an interview. A crucial part of the program includes discussions and activities regarding work-related behaviors (punctuality, attendance, conflict resolution, communication, motivation and customer service).
